Hey lemme ask you a question: I have a turbocharged 1.8L I4 in my Audi, but it is positioned such that the cylinders run a straight line front-to-back, not left-to-right like yours in this picture.

Which is which, and what are they called? Tranverse...somethin'?

Transverse is the left-to-right arrangement. The vast majority of FWD cars have a transverse layout, as it allows for much more efficient packaging. The longitudinal (front-to-back) layout was traditional for RWD (since power is being transmitted toward the back of the car instead of a transaxle beside or under the engine), but a few manufacturers (especially Audi) have used it for FWD.

FWD are typically transverse, and what this does is save space so that you can have more room in the car for the same exterior footprint.

Transverse also means you don't have to re-orient the output of the engine by 90 degrees, saving on some waste there.

plastic dipsticks suck! Why would they make the entire thing (not the handle) orange plastic? It's actually hard to read and check the oil level, particularly when the oil is fresh after an oil change!

Transverse allows for more efficient packaging - the back of the engine and transmission do not intrude on passenger space. Audi have traditionally used longitudinal layouts to accommodate their 4WD system (although transverse 4WD/AWD systems have been around for a long time, too). I'd argue that, for FWD, transverse makes a lot of sense - I'm pretty sure that Audi is the only manufacturer still building longitudinal FWD drivetrains for inline engines.

By this you mean that the flywheel/crankshaft are already spinning the same direction as the wheels? Versus longitudinally mounted, when you've got your crankshaft basically spinning left-to-right in respect to the car, while the tires themselves need to spin back-to-front?

Typically FWD = transverse and RWD = Longitudinally. AWD can be either. But yes, for space as well.

Transverse V8s are already off the list because driving the front wheels with a V8 is among the most fucking retarded things you can try to do with a V8 besides attempting to eat it.

Lot's of TV6 cars don't have the engine mounted such that the other cylinder bank is parallel with the firewall while also covered by an intake manifold. Example 1:

On this car, new plugs also mean new intake manifold gaskets, and maybe jacking the thing up.

3.2 I-6 piston + piston ring job. They are short handed in the service department and the manager told me (ex Volvo Master tech) to do it.

Neuspeed P-Flo. I think there are nicer looking (like the VWR intake), but this one is cheap, excellent quality and fitment, keeps fuel trims in a safe range and it is CARB legal. Probably the best intake overall for the R, imo.
